Fun fact about the Washington Monument: About a third of the way up the monument, the color of the marble changes. This is a byproduct of a lengthy delay in construction and the subsequent sourcing of the remaining materials. Construction of the monument ground to a halt in 1854 when donations ran out and wouldn’t resume until 1879 under the direction of the Army Corps of Engineers.
